Academic Background
Prof. Kawooya's academic journey began at Makerere University, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1983, followed by a Master of Medicine in Radiology in 1988. He further specialized with a radiology fellowship at the University of Tübingen in Germany (1989–1991) and an ultrasound fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in the USA in 2001.
Leadership and Institutional Development
As the Director of the Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (ECUREI), Prof. Kawooya has been instrumental in establishing the institute as a premier center for ultrasound and medical imaging training in Sub-Saharan Africa. Under his leadership, ECUREI has expanded its academic programs and gained recognition as a World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) Centre of Excellence.
