Prof. Michael Grace Kawooya
Professor Michael Grace Kawooya is a distinguished Ugandan radiologist, educator, and researcher whose contributions have significantly advanced medical imaging and radiology training across Africa.
Academic Background
Prof. Kawooya earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Makerere University in 1983, followed by a Master of Medicine in Radiology in 1988. He further specialized through a radiology fellowship at the University of Tübingen, Germany (1989–1991), and an ultrasound fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University, USA, in 2001.
Leadership and Institutional Development
Prof. Kawooya serves as the Director of the Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (ECUREI), where he has played a central role in transforming the institute into a leading centre for ultrasound and medical imaging training in Sub-Saharan Africa. Under his leadership, ECUREI has expanded its academic offerings and achieved recognition as a World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) Centre of Excellence.
He also serves as the Vice Chancellor of Ernest Cook University, providing strategic leadership and guiding the institution’s academic growth and development.
Research and Publications
Prof. Kawooya’s research focuses on ultrasound and diagnostic imaging, particularly in resource-limited settings. He has authored over 55 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to book chapters on subjects such as the imaging of tropical diseases. His work has played a key role in advancing the application of medical imaging in healthcare systems across Africa.

Dr. Fred Kirumira is an accomplished Ugandan administrator and researcher with extensive expertise in healthcare management and medical imaging services. He currently serves as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at Ernest Cook University (ECU), while also holding the role of Senior Administrative Consultant at the ECUREI Diagnostic Imaging Centre in Kampala, Uganda.
