
Ernest Cook University at MICCAI 2026 | Strasbourg, France
Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) is one of the world’s leading international conferences at the intersection of medical imaging, artificial intelligence, computer science, engineering and clinical medicine. The 29th edition was held in Strasbourg, France, from 27th September to 1st October 2026, bringing together thousands of researchers, clinicians, engineers, students and industry experts from around the world.
Ernest Cook University was represented at MICCAI 2026 by its ICT team, comprising of Anna Maria Muzaaya, Patience Atukunda and Paul Seruwagi. The team engaged with the global medical imaging and technology community, gaining insights into emerging innovations in medical imaging, artificial intelligence and AI-driven healthcare.
The conference showcased cutting edge research and innovations in AI for medical image analysis, computer assisted diagnosis & intervention, medical foundation models, digital pathology, robotics, explainable AI and clinical translation. Particular emphasis was placed on translating AI innovations from research laboratories into reliable, trustworthy and meaningful clinical applications.
During the conference, the ECU team had the opportunity to meet with Prof Karim Lekadir from the University of Barcelona, who delivered an insightful keynote speech that highlighted Ernest Cook University and its work in advancing health sciences education, innovation and medical imaging. The team also had a valuable engagement with Dr. Hala Lamdouar, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, professional networking and exploring potential areas of collaboration.
Through workshops, tutorials, challenges, keynote addresses, and networking opportunities, MICCAI 2026 provided the ECU team with valuable exposure to the future of AI-enabled medical imaging, digital health, research and clinical innovation.
The experience reinforces Ernest Cook University’s commitment to connecting education, technology, research, and clinical practice, while positioning the University to contribute meaningfully to the evolving landscape of AI-driven healthcare in Uganda and beyond.
