
ECU triumphs in Innovation
Ernest Cook University (ECU) has once again demonstrated its leadership in innovation and engineering excellence after emerging as the overall winner at the Innovation Competition themed “Building a Better World Through Engineering,” held on 17th April 2026 at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).
The University’s winning project, “Low-Cost Self-Disinfecting Refrigerating Centrifuge,” was developed by the Biomedical Engineering team and impressed the panel of judges with its originality, practical application and potential to improve healthcare service delivery. The project was recognized for addressing real-world challenges by providing an affordable and efficient solution that enhances laboratory safety while reducing operational costs in healthcare facilities.
Where creativity drives innovation
The competition attracted participants from higher education institutions across Uganda, providing a platform for young innovators to showcase engineering solutions that respond to societal needs through science, technology and innovation. ECU’s victory highlights the University’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence in biomedical engineering, health sciences and applied research.
The event was graced by Hon. Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, who served as the Guest of Honour. Also in attendance was Prof. Joseph Ngonzi, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, alongside academic leaders, researchers, students and industry stakeholders from across the country.
